Beach Towns
It's no Caribbean, but if you're going to beach it in Peru, the north coast is the place to do it. The main season runs
from December to April, though you'll see surfers out all year. A couple of points of interest:
1 PUERTO CHICAMA
This old sugar port, about 90 minutes north of Trujillo, lays claim to one of the longest
left-hand waves in the world. The town's not much to look at, but it attracts a bevy of
international surfers and is home to Peru's National Surfing Championship. Waves can
be found year-round, but the best time to ride is between March and June. Surf shops
in Huanchaco arrange day trip trips. Otherwise, El Inti (
57-6138;
) has good rooms and impressive gourmet

fare (S20 to S35).
2 PUNTA SAL
The long, curvy bay at Punta Sal, 25km north of Máncora, has fine sand and is dotted
with rocky bits, but it's still great for a dip in the ocean. The sea here is calm, which
means the area is particularly popular with families. The seaside Hotel Punta Sal (
59-6700; www.puntasal.com.pe ; s/d per person incl full board from S280/479, bungalows for 2 from
S582; ) is a great option for those with little ones, full of distractions such as
minigolf, banana-boat rides, table tennis, billiards and a wooden-decked pool. Grown-
ups will dig the rainbow-colored bungalows with fabulous terraces.
Chiclayo

Spanish missionaries founded this small rural community at a dusty oasis in the 16th cen-
tury, and it has prospered ever since. In one of the first sharp moves in Peruvian real es-
tate, the missionaries chose a spot that sits at the hub of vital trade routes connecting the
coast, the highlands and the deep jungle. The result: a bustling coastal city that shows no
signs of slowing down.
