In-Depth Information
It is easy to hire private taxis for day trips to nearby villages and the Sacred Valley. Be
sure to negotiate rates in advance.
Car & Motorcycle
Given all the hazards of driving yourself around, it is highly recommended to consider
hiring a taxi for the day - it's cheaper and safer than renting a car. Otherwise, you'll find a
couple of rental agencies at the bottom of Av El Sol. Motorcycle rentals are offered by a
couple of agencies in the first block of Saphi heading away from the Plaza de Armas.
Train
Cuzco has two train stations:
Estación Poroy ( 58-1414, Av Pachacutec s/n) On the outskirts of the city, it serves travelers headed to Ol-
lantaytambo and Machu Picchu.
Estación Huanchac ( 58-1414; 7am-5pm Mon-Fri, to midnight Sat & Sun) Near the end of Av El Sol, this is
for passengers headed to Puno and Lake Titicaca.
You can buy tickets at Estación Huanchac, but it's best to reserve in advance directly
through PeruRail ( www.perurail.com ) - especially during high season. Downtown's Estación
San Pedro is used only for local trains, which foreigners cannot board.
Getting Around
To/From the Airport
The airport is about 6km south of the city center. A taxi to or from the city center to the
airport costs S10. An official radio taxi hailed at the airport costs S12 to S25. With ad-
vance reservations, many hotels offer free pickup.
Bus
Local rides on public transportation cost only S0.60, though it's easier to walk or just take
a taxi than to figure out where any given combi is headed.
