3.4. Analysis of Particles
Four samples were impacted in this study. Two substrates used were
aluminum and the other two were steel. Two different particle types were used
as projectiles. While both types of particles in this study were nanocrystalline
aluminum, particle sizes varied. The powder referred to as ―fine‖ consisted of
particle sizes with dimensions typically less than 50 µm, and the ―coarse‖
particles approximately 400 µm. In both cases, materials were determined to
be 6063 Aluminum when analyzed by the Niton portable XRF device.
Substrates were prepared before they were impacted upon by the particles.
Preparation consisted of sanding and polishing to obtain a smooth surface
finish; this allowed the samples to be carefully examined prior to impacts for
