Mathematical Analysis
The gun is made from a piece of 1 -1/2‖ schedule 40 PVC tubing and is 10
feet in length. The inner diameter of the tube is slightly larger than the 40mm
outside diameter of a ball. The tube is fitted with endplates and sealed using 3‖
wide tape. The endplates support the tube and provide a good surface for the
tape as shown in Figure 21.

A first-order analysis by Ayars and Buchholtz (2004) suggests that the
maximum muzzle velocity is less than the speed of sound and that the gun
approaches this value asymptotically with increasing barrel length. Initial
