OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
LASTRA FARM HOTEL
For a dose of country air, head to this converted 16th-century farmhouse, located inland from the beach town of
Amlwch. There are five bedrooms in the main building, but we prefer the three in the cute little coach house,
100m away. Both the hotel (

)
and its restaurant have won local tourism awards; it's a popular place, so book ahead.
Sights
Seawatch Centre
( 01248-410300; 10.30am-4.30pm daily mid-Feb-Oct , Sat & Sun Nov) Anglesey's treacher-
ous east coast has claimed numerous ships over the centuries, perhaps most famously the
Royal Charter in 1859, which claimed 460 lives and £360,000 of gold. This little centre is
devoted to the brave souls of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI), including
Richard Evans (1905-2001), who rescued 281 people in his 49 years stationed here; his
statue stands outside.
MUSEUM
Lligwy Burial Chamber
Sometime before 3000 BC the local people raised Lligwy's 25-tonne capstone into
place, forming a stone chamber which they covered with an earthen mound. When the
barrow was excavated in 1908, the bones of about 30 people were found buried within. To
find it, look for the country lane marked 'Ancient Monument' near the roundabout on the
approach to Moelfre. Park at the marked car park and walk back along the road; the cham-
ber is on the right, although the sign is partly obscured by an overgrown hedge.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
Din Lligwy
In the 4th century, during the relative stability of the lengthy Roman occupation,
local farmers built a small fortified settlement here consisting of stone buildings behind a
large stone wall. All that remains are the foundations, but it's enough to give a good sense
of the layout of the site. Nearby, across the fields, stands the photogenic remains of a
12th-century chapel. The small crypt beneath appears vampire-free.
Din Lligwy sits on the same farm as the Lligwy burial chamber and shares the same car
park.
