In-Depth Information
Art exhibits work by contemporary Welsh artists as well as an annual international com-
petition (mid-July to late August). The small permanent collection is supplemented by a
continuous roster of temporary exhibitions. The chapel itself has the feel of a courtroom
but the acoustics are good - it's used for concerts, theatre and talks.

Housed in a rare example of a late-medieval Welsh town house, the Owain Glyndŵr
Centre has somewhat dry displays but nevertheless tells a rip-roaring story of the Welsh
hero's fight for independence. Although it's called the Old Parliament Building it was
probably built around 1460, some 50 years after Glyndŵr instituted his parliament on this
site, but it's believed to closely resemble the former venue.
Activities
The rolling wooded hills that surround Machynlleth shelter some of the best mountain
biking in the country with numerous tracks and bridleways criss-crossing the hills and
four excellent trails to follow.
There is, in addition, a walking and cycling trail that leads off the A487 (just north of
the train station) and follows a countryside path, crossing the Millennium Bridge, and
leading you towards the CAT by the greenest possible forms of transport.
Dyfi Mountain Biking
( www.dyfimountainbiking.org.uk ) Maintaining three waymarked mountain-bike routes from
Machynlleth, Dyfi Mountain Biking offers the Mach 1 (10 miles), 2 (14 miles) and 3 (19
miles), each more challenging than the one before. The Mach 3's certainly not for begin-
ners. In the Dyfi Forest, near Corris, is the custom-built, 9-mile Cli-machx loop trail. In
May the same crew run the Dyfi Enduro , a noncompetitive, long-distance mountain-bike
challenge, limited to 650 riders.
