first 12 miles it shadows the Ystwyth, while at the end it enters the Teifi Valley. At the
Aberystwyth end you can pick up the trail from the footbridge on Riverside Tce, but
you'll get more downhills from Tregaron.
LÔN TEIFI & LÔN CAMBRIA
Two long-distance cycling routes that are part of the Sustrans ( 0845 113 0065; www.sustransorg.uk ) Na-
tional Cycle Network cut clear through Mid-Wales. The Lôn Teifi (Rte 82) heads 98 miles from Fishguard
through Cardigan, Lampeter and Tregaron to Aberystwyth. From here the 113-mile Lôn Cambria (Rte 81) kicks
in, passing through Rhayader, Newtown and Welshpool en route to Shrewsbury. Sustrans is a charity devoted to
promoting sustainable transport modes. You can buy maps of the routes through its website.

this narrow-gauge railway. Old steam locomotives built between 1923 and 1938 have
been lovingly restored by volunteers and chug for almost 12 miles up the beautiful
wooded valley of the River Rheidol to Devil's Bridge. The line opened in 1902 to bring
lead and timber out of the valley.

a lift on the trundling little Cliff Railway, the UK's longest electric funicular (1896) and
possibly the slowest, too, at a G-force-busting 4 mph.
Sleeping
Aberystwyth has a glut of hotels and B&Bs of widely varying standards, many refusing to
give up on their old-fashioned decor and attitudes. Thankfully things have improved a
little in recent years.
