Water distribution in animal facilities is designed to meet peak consumption
demand during warm weather. Water consumption is typically not restricted or con-
trolled, with the exception of water withdrawal to encourage later consumption of
water for administration of drugs or vaccines. Commercial poultry facilities tradi-
tionally used an open trough system to provide water, but have almost exclusively
adopted nipple drinker systems for layers and broilers (Figure 8.4) or bell waterers for
turkeys (Figure 8.5) over the past 20 years. Swine operations have used nipple-type
