In-Depth Information
MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
Mikumi's main roads are well maintained, and the park can be visited year-
round, although during the rainy season from about December to May, the an-
imals are more widely scattered.
The best and most reliable wildlife watching is around the Mkata floodplain,
to the northwest of the main road, with the Millennium (Little Serengeti) area a
highlight. Another attraction is the Hippo Pools area, just northwest of the main
entry gate, where you can watch hippos at close range, plus do some fine bird-
ing. Remember park fees are good per 24-hour period.
SLEEPING & EATING
The park has four ordinary campsites. The two closest to the park headquarters have toilet
facilities and one has a shower. There is a special campsite near Choga Wale in the north
of the park. The 'new' park bandas (per person US$50) , just behind the main park office
complex, were privately leased at the time of research. Once they are back with Tanapa
(likely within the lifetime of this topic), they will be available to the public. Rooms (in at-
tached brick bungalows with shared hot-water bathrooms and shared kitchen) are clean and
fine, but given the location just behind park headquarters and the price, it's better to eco-
nomise and stay in Mikumi town or splurge on one of the park lodges.
