place has four spacious, comfortable rooms (two self-contained and two sharing a bath-
room) and a garden so gorgeous and full of birds you'll forget you're in Bukoba. Dinner
must be ordered long in advance.
Bukoba Co-op Hotel HOTEL $
( 028-222 1251; Shore Rd; s Tsh25,000, d Tsh30,000-40,000; ) The former Yaasila
Top has slightly aged, but decent enough rooms with TVs, ceiling fans and minifridge, but
the best feature is its location at the end of Bukoba Beach. Rooms on the 2nd floor have
limited lake views and the restaurant is one of Bukoba's best.
ELCT Bukoba Hotel HOTEL $
( 0754-415404; www.elctbukobahotel.com ; Aerodrome Rd; s/tw/ste Tsh30,000/35,000/
50,000; ) This Lutheran conference centre between the lake and the city centre is a
good, long-standing place with comfortable rooms and pleasant grounds. The sign prom-
ises 'Tranquillity' and the hotel delivers.
Kolping Bukoba Hotel HOTEL $
( 028-222 1236; r Tsh35,000-55,000, ste Tsh75,000; ) If Balamaga is full, you can
enjoy similar lake views from this otherwise ordinary church-run place nearby. The pricier
rooms in the new building have the best views.
Kiroyera Campsite BUNGALOWS, CAMPGROUND $
( 0784-568276; www.kiroyeratours.com ; Shore Rd; camping with own/hired tent US$5/
7, bandas without bathroom per person US$15) A great backpackers' spot on the beach
(very crowded on weekends) with a simple restaurant and the most original rooms in Tan-
zania: three genuine Haya msonge (grass huts) with beds and electricity. It's expensive, but
a fantastic idea.
ANCIENT KATURUKA
The newly developed Katuruka Heritage Site ( 0786-165951; adult/child
Tsh10,000/1000; 9am-5pm Tue-Sun) aims to preserve history and culture.
Historically speaking, the main feature is excavations of the oldest (500 BC;
long before equivalent techniques were known in Europe) known iron smelting
furnace in East, Central and Southern Africa, but it amounts to just old bricks
