and some small nuggets. Much more interesting are the shrines to King Rugo-
mora (r 1650-75AD) and Mugasha, the god of storms and water, and the le-
gends your guide will tell you about them. A replica of the king's thatch burial
house holds a small archaeological museum. Shortfalls and all, it's a project
worth supporting and a chance to see deeply rural Tanzania.
From Bukoba, take a Maruka-bound dalla-dalla to Katuruka (Tsh1000, 45
minutes), where the ticket booth is 200m off the road. It's best to call and let
staff know you're coming.
CMK Lodge HOTEL $
( 0682-265028; off Uganda Rd; r Tsh20,000-30,000; ) Plain to the point of boring,
but sparkling new rooms (featuring urinals!) and eager staff make this near-downtown hotel
one of Bukoba's best values.
Lake Hotel HOTEL $
( 0754-767964; r Tsh7000, without bathroom Tsh12,000-20,000;) This historic hotel
(see Notable Buildings, Click here ) near but not at the lake lacks any elegance it may have
once had (in fact, some rooms are downright shabby), but it still clings to a hint of histor-
ical charm.
New Banana Hotel HOTEL $
( 028-222 0861; Zamzam Rd; s/d Tsh13,000/ 15,000, ste Tsh25,000) Run-down, but still
bright and cheery and in a good location. There's hot water, and fresh flowers in the rooms
show management cares.
Wawata Kolping Hotel HOTEL $
(Miembeni St; dm/tw Tsh2000/10,000) This simple but clean church-run spot behind the
cathedral is the cheapest place to lay your head.
EATING & DRINKING
Menus throughout Bukoba almost always feature grilled fish and usually ndizi (cooked
plantains; called matoke in the Haya language) instead of ugali .
Bukoba Co-op Hotel INTERNATIONAL $
(Shore Rd; meals Tsh3000-7000; breakfast, lunch & dinner) The beach seating makes
this a popular gathering spot and the grilled tiliapia, pizzas and curries are pretty good.
