Though architecturally unappealing on the outside, the common areas have an artistically
rendered Maasai motif. The 73 rooms are uninspired but spacious, with small sitting rooms
and two double beds, plus views. Good food too. It's 45 minutes south of Seronera on the
edge of the Niaroboro Hills.

) A refreshingly small budget (by Serengeti standards) camp on the plains near Robanda
village just outside Ikoma gate with ten no-frills tents: standard large ones and cheaper
small ones with toilet outdoors. You can do guided walks and night drives here, if you have
your own vehicle.

rock hyrax), this large and crowded place has an ideal location. The rooms and service,
however, are overdue for improvement.
WESTERN SERENGETI
In addition to seasonal proximity to the migration (which generally passes through some-
time between late May and early July), the Western Corridor offers resident herds of wilde-
beest and reliable year-round wildlife watching, particularly close to the forest-fringed Gru-
meti River with its hippos and giant crocodiles.

) Instead of taking to the hills for panoramic views, Grumeti gets down into the
thick of the action along the Kanyanja River; a prime spot during the migration when you
can watch crocs catch wildebeest as you lounge in the swimming pool. It mixes its wild
bush location with a chic pan-Africa decor and the 10 tents are as luxe as can be; though
only three have unobstructed river views.
