In-Depth Information
If you don't want to cook yourself, there are two local restaurants (meals around
Tsh5000) and three little groceries at staff quarters and anyone can dine at Twiga Rest-
house.
CENTRAL & SOUTHERN SERENGETI
Central Serengeti is the most visited area of the park, and it's readily accessed from both
Arusha and Mwanza. Park offices and many campsites are around Seronera, which has
a good mix of habitats and year-round water in some places making wildlife especially
abundant. Southeast of Seronera is a prime base for wildlife watching during the
December-April wet season, when it's full of wildebeest, though wildlife concentrations
here are quite low in the dry season and this area has the fewest lions in the Serengeti. The
more rugged southwest has many attractive hills and kopjes and is the best place to see
predators.
Twiga Resthouse GUESTHOUSE $$
( 028-262 1510; serengeti_tourism@yahoo.com; per person US$30; ) Simple but de-
cent rooms with electricity, hot showers and satellite TV in the lounge. Guests can use the
kitchen or meals can be cooked for you if you order way in advance. There's a well-stocked
little bar and like all the luxury lodges, there's a bonfire at night. If Twiga is full, there
might be room at the similar Taj Resthouse, used mostly used by visiting park officials.
Kirawira resthouse in the Western Corridor needs some serious renovation, but you can
also inquire about sleeping there.
Dunia Camp TENTED CAMP $$$
( www.asiliaafrica.com/Dunia ; s/d all-inclusive US$783/1216; Jun-Mar; ) Unlike the
large impersonal lodges that predominate in Seronera, this is an intimate eight-tent camp
with a classic safari ambience. Lovely and comfortable, with great service, it's essentially
a mobile camp that stays put. Set below the Niaroboro Hills, but at the end of a long, slow
rise, Dunia has both distant views and up-close encounters with wildlife. Highly recom-
mended if you want a bush atmosphere. No direct bookings, contact a travel agent.
Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge LODGE $$$
( 027-254 5555; www.serenahotels.com ; s/d full board US$445/655; ) Ser-
ena's two-storey Maasai-style bungalows each have three very comfortable and well-ap-
pointed rooms with lovely furnishings and views. The top-floor rooms are best. Guides lead
short nature walks around their hill and the Maasai do a dance show at night. A good loca-
tion for those who want to explore several parts of the park but not switch accommodation.
