The Octagon Safari Lodge & Irish Bar LODGE $$
( 027-253 4525; www.octagonlodge.com ; r per person US$55; ) This Irish-Tan-
zanian owned lodge is tops in town, but the unexpectedly lush and lovely grounds mean
you'll soon feel far away from Karatu. The cottages are small but comfortable and by
Karatu standards the rates are excellent. The restaurant and Irish bar (open to nonguests,
but call before coming) round out the relaxing vibe. Cultural walks can be arranged, as can
Ngorongoro safaris. It's 1km south of the main road on the west side of town.
Vera Inn GUESTHOUSE $
( 0754-578145; Milano Rd, Bwani; s/d Tsh25,000/30,000; ) One of the best gues-
thouses in Karatu, rooms are small but sparkling clean and have hot-water showers and
cable TV.
Continental Guesthouse GUESTHOUSE $
(
0754-781040; Bwani; d Tsh10,000, d & tw without bathroom Tsh5000/8000;
)
Simple but clean with squat toilets and sometimes hot water showers.
Ngorongoro Camp & Lodge BACKPACKERS $$$
( 027-253 4287; www.ngorongorocampandlodge.net ; Arusha Rd; camping US$7, s/d/
tr US$81/160/220; ) Also using the name Ngonorongoro Safari Resort, this place
behind a petrol station on the main road is always busy with overland trucks. Camping fa-
cilities are good and the rooms are too, though they should be half the price.
Bump's Café TANZANIAN, EUROPEAN $
(Arusha Rd, meals Tsh4000-8000; breakfast, lunch & dinner; ) A simple (but fancy
by Karatu standards) American-Maasai-owned restaurant on the west end of town with a
mix of local and Western meals. The menu is limited after lunchtime, and it closes at 7pm.
A good spot to order lunch boxes. There's also an internet cafe costing Tsh2000 per hour.
Paradise Garden TANZANIAN $
(Arusha Rd; meals Tsh2500-4000; breakfast, lunch & dinner) Serves a few extras, such
as vegetable curry and spaghetti bolognese, besides the usual suspects (chicken and chips,
of course) in little huts. It's next to Ngorongoro Camp & Lodge.
