Migunga Tented Camp TENTED CAMP $$$

) The main attraction of this place (still known by its previous name, Lake Manyara
Tented Camp) is its setting in a grove of enormous fever trees ( migunga in Swahili) that
echoes with bird calls. The 21 tents ringing large, grassy grounds are small but quite ad-
equate, and there's a great rustic dining room. The adjacent campsite has good hot-water
facilities. Village tours and mountain bike hire are available. It's 2km south of the main
road.
Rift Valley Photographic Lodge LODGE $$$
( 0752-461088; www.riftvalleylodge.com ; per person full board US$160; ) An at-
tractively designed (with Maasai overtones) lodge on Manyara's scenic east shore making
full use of the lake and escarpment views. The 10 pretty plush cottages with real thatch
roofs and private decks and the cosy common areas are built around a lone baobab.
E Unoto Retreat LODGE $$$
( 0787-622724; www.maasaivillage.com ; s/d full board US$395/640; ) This classy
Maasai-themed lodge has 25 spacious round bungalows nestled at the base of the Rift Val-
ley Escarpment by Lake Miwaleni. There's rewarding birding in the area, as well as the
chance for various cultural activities. It's 11km out of Mto wa Mbu, off the Lake Natron
road.
Ol Mesera Tented Camp TENTED CAMP $$
( 0784-428332; www.ol-mesera.com ; s/d full board US$105/195; ) Run by a spritely
Slovenian pensioner, this personalised place, in a placid deep bush setting amid baobab
and euphorbia trees, has four straightforward safari tents and is an ideal spot to do cultural
walks or just relax for a few days. Barbara's meals are served in a little grass-roofed dining
hall between two giant baobabs. Student discounts available. It's 14km up the Lake Natron
road. Public transport towards Engaruka or Lake Natron can drop you at the turn-off, from
where it's an easy 1.5km walk.
In Mto wa Mbu
There are many cheap guesthouses in Mto wa Mbu. The best area to look is south of the
main road behind Panone petrol station and the market. The two overlander-backpacker
places are 1km east of town.
