something different. On a forested hillside in the Suye Hill area just southeast of town,
Karama offers proximity to both nature and the town centre. Accommodation is in 22
rustic and very lovely stilt bungalows, each with a verandah and views to both Kilimanjaro
and Meru on clear days. There are short walking trails nearby and a creative restaurant
(Tsh8000 to Tsh14,000) which caters to vegetarians. A full spa is planned, but massage and
yoga are already offered. It's signposted north of Old Moshi Rd.
Moyoni Lodge LODGE $$
( 0784-841555; www.moyoni-lodge.com ; Visiwani Rd; s/d US$65/100, d without bath-
room US$30; ) On the northern edge of Arusha, this small lodge's jungle-like
grounds give a strong sense of escape. The seven sizeable regular rooms are cleverly dec-
orated with banana leaves and other materials and there are also two backpacker rooms.
Meals are available, though choices are limited. A taxi from town costs about Tsh6000.
Onsea House LODGE $$$
( 0787-112498; www.onseahouse.com ; s/d US$240/290; ) Run by a Belgian
chef whose eye for the little things is what really makes this lovely bed and breakfast such
a great place. The regular rooms and the outer bandas in the gardens each have their own
themes, plus there is a small restaurant (lunch/dinner US$30/60) of course. Very tranquil
and very classy. It's about 1km off the Moshi road on the edge of town.
Kigongoni LODGE $$$
( 0732-978876; www.kigongoni.net ; s/d/tr incl guided walks US$172/244/305;
) Kigongoni's tranquil hilltop perch about 5km past Arusha gives it an almost wilderness
feel. Spacious cottages, all with porches, fireplaces and wide views, are scattered around
the forest, some quite a hilly walk from the cosy common areas. A portion of the lodge's
profits go to support the Sibusisu Foundation ( www.sibusiso.com ) which helps mentally
disabled children in the area. It's about 5km beyond Arusha towards Moshi.
L'Oasis Lodge LODGE $$
( 0757-557802; www.loasistanzania.com ; s/d/tr US$75/100/145, backpacker r per per-
son without bathroom US$25; ) Offering a good balance between proximity
to town and relaxing surroundings, this clued-in place north of the city centre has a mix
of African-style rondavels and airy stilt houses set around peaceful gardens. (But skip the
outrageously overpriced 'backpacker' rooms across the road.) The restaurant (Tsh8500 to
Tsh13,500) features a good menu of freshly made meals like salads, wraps, spiced bean and
