In-Depth Information
( 0777-875515; www.kinazi.com ; s/d US$35/50) This place amid the palms and coastal
pines is on a good section of beach, with accommodation in a mix of rustic and slightly
rundown thatched and wooden bungalows with bathrooms, one nicer suite and meals.
Ufukwe Bungalows BUNGALOW $
(r US$45, without bathroom US$25-35) Ufukwe is a tiny house with four very basic,
slightly scruffy rooms that are pricey for what you get. The location, however - on the
beach, just north of Arabian Nights Annex - is good.
GETTING THERE & AWAY
Bus 324 runs several times daily between Paje and Stone Town en route to/from Bwejuu,
with the last departure from Paje at about 4pm. The Makunduchi-Michamvi dalla-dalla
also stops at Bwejuu; see the Makunduchi section.
BWEJUU
The large village of Bwejuu lies about 3km north of Paje on a long, palm-shaded beach.
It's quite spread out, and quieter and less crowded than Paje and Nungwi, with a mellow
atmosphere and nothing much more to do other than wander along the sand and listen to
the breezes rustling the palm trees.
SLEEPING & EATING
Evergreen Bungalows Bwejuu BUNGALOW $$
( 024-224 0273; www.evergreen-bungalows.com ; r US$70-90) North of Bwejuu village,
the well-maintained Evergreen has spiffy two-storey beach bungalows, plus several sep-
arate single- storey 'palm garden' cottages back from the beach. All have bathrooms, al-
though the palm garden cottages have only cold water. There's a restaurant and a dive
centre.
Twisted Palms Lodge BUNGALOW $$
( 0776-130275; www.twistedpalms.zanzibarone.com ; s/d/tr US$40/50/60, s/d/tr/q on
beach US$55/65/75/85) Twisted Palms is now under new Italian management, which is
working hard to make it a tranquil beach retreat. There are five, clean, bright cottages up
on a hill just behind the road, each with one double and one twin bed. Directly on the beach
are five more beachside cottages (two quads, two triples, one double). There's a dhow for
excursions. Seafood meals are available.
