a relaxing bar-restaurant area on the beach. The emphasis is on partnering and integration
with the local community.

) This friendly Bwejuu institution, run by former Zanzibari MP Mama Naila and her
son Mahfoud, is worth considering for the opportunity it gives for insights into local life
(which you'll be right in the middle of) rather than for its comforts. Accommodation is in
small, heavily furnished rooms in a crowded beachside compound. All have hot water and
minifridge. There are also two newer and nicer sea-view suites, a cosy tree-house lounge-
library area overlooking the beach and a good restaurant. The beach immediately in front
isn't the best, but there's a pool, and you can walk to better beaches nearby.

northern end of Bwejuu has just two simple bungalows and meals.
Mustapha's Place

US$20-25) The vibey Rasta-run Mustapha's has a variety of simple, creatively decorated
rooms, some with their own bathroom and all with their own theme. Meals are taken family
style, and staff can assist with bike rental, drumming lessons and other diversions. It's south
of Bwejuu village, and just across the road from the beach.
GETTING THERE & AWAY
Bus 324 goes daily between Stone Town and Bwejuu, and will drop you along the main
road, from where it's about 500m down to the beach.
MICHAMVI PENINSULA
Beginning about 4km north of Bwejuu, the land begins to taper off into the narrow
Michamvi Peninsula, where there are several upmarket retreats and a few budget places.
The beach is lovely here, and comparatively quiet, though this will likely not last long.
