In-Depth Information
( 024-223 9319; www.riftvalley-zanzibar.com ; s US$70-160, d US$90-190; ) This
small, good-value boutique-style hotel above the eponymous coffee house in Hurumzi has
just eight rooms, most spacious, some with private bathroom and all decorated with Zan-
zibari beds and period decor. The price includes a great rooftop breakfast (both the rooftop
area and the breakfast). It's no frills, but in a comfortable, upmarket sort of way, and atmo-
spheric, and gets good reviews.
Jafferji House & Spa LUXURY HOTEL $$$
( www.jafferjihouse.net ; Gizenga St; ste US$190-505; ) This restored family home,
under the same management as the Zanzibar Gallery and Gallery Tours & Safaris, was just
opening as this topic was researched, with 10 top-of-the-line rooms (all named after fam-
ous Zanzibari figures, and authentically furnished), a rooftop spa, a cafe and a library. It's a
fine place to experience genuine Zanzibari culture and tradition in exceptionally comfort-
able surroundings.
Stone Town Café B&B B&B $$
( 0778-373737; www.stonetowncafe.com ; Kenyatta Rd; s/d US$70/80; ) Above
Stone Town Café, this B&B has a handful of simple, spotless rooms, all with hot water
bathrooms and cable TV, and a good, healthy breakfast included in the price.
Clove Hotel HOTEL $$
( 0777-484567; www.zanzibarhotel.nl ; Hurumzi St; s/d/f from US$40/65/80) Renovated
several years ago, but now beginning to fade, Clove has decent but rather spartan rooms
(check out a few) with fans. The family rooms also have small balconies with views down
onto the square below. On the rooftop is a terrace with breakfast, drinks and views.
236 Hurumzi BOUTIQUE HOTEL $$$
( 0777-423266; www.236hurumzi.com ; Hurumzi St; s US$125, d US$165-250;
) Formerly Emerson & Green, this Zanzibar institution is located in two adjacent historic
buildings that have been restored along the lines of an Arabian Nights fantasy and are full
of character. Each room (most reached by steep staircases) is unique (one even has its own
private rooftop teahouse) and all are decadently decorated to give you an idea of what Zan-
zibar must have been like in its heyday. Service and standards were suffering on our last
visit, but this will hopefully be soon remedied. It's several winding blocks east of the Old
Fort.
