ETIQUETTE ON THE ARCHIPELAGO
Zanzibar and Pemba are conservative, Muslim societies, and many locals take
offence at scantily clad Westerners. Women should avoid sleeveless tops and
plunging necklines, and stick with pants, skirts or at least knee-length shorts.
For men, keep your shirt on when wandering around town, and preferably also
wear pants or knee-length shorts. During Ramadan take particular care with
dress, and show respect by not eating or drinking in public places during day-
light hours.
