In-Depth Information
prevent being swept over. Every couple of years some unfortunate locals and foreign tour-
ists drown in the river, and it's difficult at best to retrieve their bodies. Swimming here is
most definitely not suitable for children.
There's also excellent hiking along the river west of the falls, and plenty of mountains
to climb, affording panoramic views along the river and far into Angola. Keen hikers can
manage the route along the 'Namibian riviera' from Swartbooi's Drift to Epupa Falls
(93km, five days) or from Ruacana to Epupa Falls (150km, eight days). You're never far
from water, but there are lots of crocodiles and, even in winter, the heat can be oppressive
and draining. It's wise to plan your trip around a full moon, when you can beat the heat by
walking at night.
As with most adventure activities in Kaokoveld, you need to be self-sufficient, as there
is no support network here to help you in the event of trouble. Carry extra supplies, espe-
cially since you may have to wait for lifts back. And, whenever possible, always advise
someone of your intended route and itinerary before striking out into the deep bush.

N$100, s/d chalets with full board N$1600/2200) This German-run camp operates through
a concession granted by a local chief, and has a well-groomed campsite with modern fa-
cilities as well as a dozen luxury chalets. It's a very attractive spot, but it can't hold a
candle to the slightly more upmarket Epupa Camp.

Located 800m upstream from the falls, this former engineering camp for a now-shelved
hydroelectric project has been converted into beautifully situated accommodation among
a grove of towering baobab trees. There are nine luxury tents filled to the brim with
curios, and a slew of activities is on offer, including Himba visits, sundowner hikes, bird-
watching walks and trips to rock-art sites. Five campsites are also available.

Getting There & Away
The road from Okongwati is accessible to high-clearance 2WD vehicles, but it's still quite
rough. As the rugged 93km 4WD river route from Swartbooi's Drift may take several
days, it's far quicker to make the trip via Otjiveze/Epembe.
