In-Depth Information
THE NORTHWEST CORNER
West of Epupa Falls is the Kaokoveld of travellers' dreams: stark, rugged desert peaks,
vast landscapes, sparse, scrubby vegetation, drought-resistant wildlife, and nomadic bands
of Himba people and their tiny settlements of beehive huts. This region, which is contigu-
ous with the Skeleton Coast Wilderness, has been designated the Kaokoveld Conservation
Area.
Sights
Van Zyl's Pass
The beautiful but frightfully steep and challenging Van Zyl's Pass forms a dramatic trans-
ition between the Kaokoveld plateaus and the vast, grassy expanses of Otjinjange Valley
(Marienflüss). This winding 13km stretch isn't suitable for trailers and may only be
passed from east to west, which means you'll have to return via Otjihaa Pass or through
Purros.
NATURAL SITE
