In-Depth Information
Estelle, have lived in the area for much of their lives and are well respected by the local
San communities. Their luxury tented camp is perched between a fossilised river valley
and a verdant teak grove, though the main attraction continues to be their wonderful ex-
cursions into local San villages. The camp is located 280km east of Grootfontein and
80km west of Tsumkwe along the C44. You must book in advance to stay here - as mo-
bile phone reception at the camp is unreliable (there's no landline), it's best to email them.
Getting There & Away
Note that you will need your own transport; a 4WD with good clearance is recommended.
There are no sealed roads in the region, and only the C44 is passable for 2WD vehicles.
Petrol is sometimes available at the Tsumkwe Country Lodge, though it's best to carry a
few jerry cans with you. If you're planning to explore the bush around Tsumkwe, it is re-
commended that you hire a local guide and travel as part of a convoy.
The Dobe border crossing to Botswana requires a 4WD and extra fuel to reach the pet-
rol stations at Maun or Etsha 6, which are accessed by a difficult sand track through north-
western Botswana.
