limestone outcrops were named when the first traveller uttered, 'Aha, some hills.' In fact,
it's a rendition of the sound made by the endemic barking gecko.
The region is pockmarked with unexplored caves and sinkholes, but don't attempt to
enter them unless you have extensive caving experience. The hills are also accessible
from the Botswana side. A border crossing is open between Tsumkwe (though this is
30km to the west of the border) and Dobe.
Sleeping & Eating
There's a restaurant at the Tsumkwe Country Lodge, and the
Tsumkwe Winkel
in town
sells limited groceries, but self-caterers would be wise to stock up on supplies before driv-
ing out here.
Nyae Nyae Conservancy Camp Sites $

The Nyae Nyae Conservancy has several campsites, the
most popular being: the Holboom Baobab at Tjokwe, southeast of Tsumkwe; Makuri, a
few kilometres east of that; and Khebi Pan, well out in the bush south of Tsumkwe. Water
is sometimes available in adjacent villages, but generally it's best to carry in all of your
supplies and be entirely self-sufficient. Avoid building fires near the baobabs - it damages
the trees' roots.

Omatako Valley Rest Camp $

Outside the conservancy at the junction of the
C44 and D3306, this community-run camp has solar power, a water pump, hot showers
and a staff of local San. It offers both hunting and gathering trips as well as traditional
music presentations.

The only tourist lodge in Tsumkwe proper is an upmarket
affair with a bar, restaurant, small shop and pool. Guests can base themselves here and
visit surrounding villages as part of an organised tour.
