KURU DANCE FESTIVAL
Another worthwhile cultural festival, held near D'kar in the Kalahari Desert, when all as-
pects of traditional bushman culture are on display. Traditional dancing and local music
feature throughout the three days of the festival.
MAHERERO DAY
This is one of Namibia's largest festivals, falling on the weekend nearest 26 August.
Dressed in traditional garb, the Red Flag Herero people gather in Okahandja for a me-
morial service to commemorate their chiefs killed in the Khoikhoi and German wars.

Temperatures are rising in Botswana but it's still a popular time for travel to the re-
gion and tourist numbers are high. Windhoek puts on some great celebrations.

Windhoek's main arts festival is held in September, and includes troupes of dancers, musi-
cians, poets and performers all competing for various prizes. The best of Namibian food is
also on show.
WINDHOEK SHOW
In late September or early October the city holds this show ( www.windhoekshow.na ),
with its roots in agriculture, on the showgrounds near the corner of Jan Jonker and Cen-
taurus Sts. Historically the event stretches back to 1899.
DOMBOSHABA FESTIVAL OF CULTURE &
HISTORY
Held near the Domboshaba ruins in Botswana, this cultural celebration pays homage to a
period 1000 years ago when the Kalanga inhabited the valleys around Limpopo. Kalanga
dance features as does choral music, crafts and traditional foods.
