also observe ostriches, korhaans (a type of bustard), marabous, white-backed vultures and
many smaller species.
The best times for wildlife drives are at first light and late in the evening, though visit-
ors aren't permitted outside the camps after dark. Guided night drives (N$600 per person)
can be booked through any of the main camps and are your best chance to see lions hunt-
ing as well as the various nocturnal species. Each of the camps also has a visitor register,
which describes any recent sightings in the vicinity.
Sleeping & Eating
The main camps inside the park are open year-round, and have restaurants, bars, shops,
swimming pools, picnic sites, petrol stations, kiosks and floodlit watering holes that at-
tract game throughout the night. Although fees are normally prepaid through NWR in
Windhoek, it is sometimes possible to reserve accommodation at either gate. However, be
advised that the park can get very busy on weekends, especially during the dry season - if
you can manage it, pre-booking is recommended.
IN THE PARK
All accommodation listed here is generally much cheaper in the off season (ie November
to June). Most visitors spend a couple of nights at one of the three rest camps, Namutoni,
Halali and Okaukuejo, which are spaced at 70km intervals.
Okaukuejo Rest Camp $$
(campsite per site N$200 plus per person N$110, s/d from N$1020/1840, chalets from
N$1100/2000; ) Pronounced 'o-ka-kui-yo', this is the site of the Etosha Research
Station, and it functions as the official park headquarters and main visitor centre. The
Okaukuejo waterhole is probably Etosha's best rhino-viewing venue, particularly between
8pm and 10pm, though you're almost guaranteed to spot zebras, wildebeest, jackals and
even elephants virtually any time of the day. Okaukuejo's campsite can get very crowded,
but the shared facilities are excellent, and include washing stations, braai pits, and bath-
room and toilet facilities with hot water. The self-catering accommodation includes older
but refurbished rooms alongside stand-alone chalets. If you want to splurge, the luxury
chalet is a stunning two-storey affair complete with a furnished centre-stage balcony
boasting unmatched views of animals lining up to drink.
