In-Depth Information
(campsite per site N$200 plus per person N$100, s/d from N$800/1400, chalets from
N$1000/1700; ) Etosha's middle camp, Halali, nestles between several incongruous
dolomite outcrops. The short Tsumasa hiking track leads up Tsumasa Kopje, the hill
nearest the rest camp, from where you can snap wonderful panoramic shots of the park.
The best feature of Halali is its floodlit waterhole, which is a 10-minute walk from the rest
camp and is sheltered by a glen of trees with huge boulders strewn about. While it's not as
dramatic in scope as Okakuejo, it's a wonderfully intimate setting where you can savour a
glass of wine in peace, all the while scanning the bush for rhinos and lions, which fre-
quently stop by to drink in the late-evening hours. Like Okakuejo, there is a very well-ser-
viced campsite here, in addition to a fine collection of luxury chalets that make for a won-
derfully relaxed night of sleep despite being deep in the African bush.
Namutoni Rest Camp $$
(campsite per site N$200 plus per person N$110, s/d from N$850/1500, chalets from
N$1000/1800; ) Etosha's easternmost camp is defined by its landmark whitewashed
German fort, a colonial relic that casts a surreal shadow over the rest of the camp. Beside
the fort is a lovely freshwater limestone spring and the floodlit King Nehale waterhole,
which is filled with reed beds and some extremely vociferous frogs. The viewing benches
are nice for lunch or watching the pleasant riverbank scene, but the spot attracts surpris-
ingly few thirsty animals. Again, like Okakuejo and Halali, Namutoni offers an immacu-
late campsite (the only campsite in the park with grass) in addition to a few luxury chalets
on the edge of the bush.

Onkoshi Camp $$$
(per person with half board incl transfers from Namutoni N$2000; ) If you feel like
a splash-out, book yourself into Onkoshi Camp. Upon arrival in Namutoni, you will be
chauffeured to a secluded peninsula on the rim of the pan, and then given the keys to one
of only 15 thatch-and-canvas chalets that rest on elevated wooden decks and occupy ex-
clusive locations well beyond the standard tourist route. The interiors, which blend rich
hardwoods, delicate bamboo, elaborate metal flourishing, finely crafted furniture, hand-
painted artwork and fine porcelain fixtures, create an overwhelmingly opulent atmo-
sphere. While the temptation certainly exists to spend your days lounging about in such
regal settings, guests are treated to personalised wildlife drives (from N$500 per person)
conducted by Etosha's finest guides, and dinners are multicourse affairs that are illumin-
ated by candlelight.
