Figure 62. Superimposed images add interest.
Depending on the type of superimposed element, this technique can completely alter an im-
age or design and add a sense of fantasy or drama, danger or suspense,
The posters for Argo (2012) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) both feature superim-
posed elements and these add visual interest and a sense of intrigue to the images, while also
providing visual clues to the film's narratives and character development.
Figure 63. Superimposed images add interest.
Simplification or embellishment
This technique, which involves simplifying or embellishing elements (line, shape, etc) to
create an abstracted version of an existing image, is common in art and design.
In the following Figure, the film poster for The Amazing Spiderman (2012) features a sim-
plified line representation of a spider's shadow. The poster for Beautiful Creatures (2013)
features embellishment of line and shape to create the highly detailed poster image.
