Another version of embellishment is the use of saturated colour or spot-colour in imagery
to create added visual interest, an approach often used in film to support narrative and char-
acter development. 51 Amelie (2001) features digitally enhanced colour to create focus and
support narrative and character development. 52 Similarly, director Warren Beatty used a
limited colour palette in Dick Tracy (1990). Eight saturated colours (red, yellow, orange,
blue, green, fuschia, purple and cyan plus B&W) were chosen because they reflected the
colours of mid 20 th century American comic topics. 53
