6.3 The telehandler (telescopic handler)
The telehandler is widely used
in the construction industry. It
is similar in appearance to a
forklift truck. The telescopic
boom can extend to a height
of 9 metres.
A wide variety of attach-
ments may be fitted to the
end of the boom such as
pallet forks, muck grab or lift
table.
The pallet fork attachment
can be used to move loads to
and from places. Loads may
be placed on loading plat-
forms or roofs, which would
otherwise need a crane.
Some machines are fitted
with front stabilisers to avoid
problems of tilting or becom-
ing unstable when handling
heavy loads.
Hazards are similar to those resulting from the use of other hydraulic lifters such as
cherry pickers and hydraulic platforms.
