TOXICOLOGY AND MODE OF ACTION
The way in which a pesticides affects target pest(s) is commonly referred to
as its mode of action. All pesticides are alike in blocking some metabolic
processes however, how they accomplish this—their mode of action—is
sometimes very difficult to determine, and in many cases are unknown or only
partially understood.
In terms of their mode of action, insecticides fall into seven classes:
physical toxicants, protoplasmic poisons, nerve poisons, metabolic inhibitors,
cytolytic toxins, muscle poisons, and alkylating agents.
