the feudal
seat of the Boscawen family, whose heirs have inherited the title of Lord Falmouth for the last 600 years.
More recently, Tregothnan has found fame as the UK's first (and only)
tea plantation
. The temperate Cornish
climate allows the cultivation of several rare-leaf teas, including assam, darjeeling and earl grey. Prices command
a considerable premium (tea bags from £3.75 for 10 sachets, loose tea from £5 for 25g). Other goodies, including
manuka honey produced by the estate's bees, are sold at the
shop
.
Tregothnan House is closed to the public, although the estate's
botanic garden
can be visited on a private tour
with the head gardener Jonathan Jones (£65). It's open for group visits on various days throughout the year, when
the admission drops to £30, so check the website for details.
The estate also has some gorgeous holiday cottages for rental, including several secluded cottages along the
Fal's verdant creeks.
Shopping
Although the city centre is dominated by high-street chains, it's worth having a wander

al shop, plus a smart gallery-cafe on the upper level. Overhead, look out for withy sculp-
tures built for the City of Lights parade.
