It's hard to imagine a better beach-
side retreat; set right on the edge of a golden cove, sandy shoes pile up beside the front
door. Plush rooms are pure driftwood-chic, with subtle, coral-themed fabrics and 'I'd
rather be at South Sands' mugs. The best is number 10, with a roomy bay-view balcony;
twin, window-side, claw-footed baths; and the biggest bed you've seen in your life. Prices
fall by £55 to £115 a night in low season.

as fancy as some Salcombe eateries, but this is a proper local pub, serving proper local
pub food - the beef for the Sunday lunch comes from within 5 miles, and the fish in the
batter has been landed by Salcombe or Brixham boats. Drinks range from well-kept real
ales to champagne, and there's a sunny, terraced beer garden.
