In-Depth Information
( 01548-845900; www.southsands.com ; South Sands; mains £15-28; noon-3pm & 6-9pm) Acclaimed res-
taurateur and fishmonger Mitch Tonks, of Dartmouth's Seahorse ( Click here ), devised the
menus at this cove-side eatery set in the South Sands hotel. Inevitably seafood features
strongly; char-grilled monk fish, Salcombe crab and West Country lobster sit alongside
ranks of pork and beef steaks. The cooking is assured; it has to be to compete with the
mesmerising bay views.
Winking Prawn
( 01548-842326; www.winkingprawn.co.uk ; North Sands; mains £15-24; 9-11am Fri-Mon, plus 11.30am-4pm
& 6-9.30pm daily, reduced hrs Nov-Mar) Overflowing with distressed driftwood-chic, this brasserie
features huge rowing oars, red ensigns and a seaview deck. It's a perfect spot to sample
sautéed scallops with bacon, sea bream with sweet pepper, and goat's cheese-themed veg-
gie options. That or work through a pitcher of Pimm's. Summer sees them busy barbe-
cuing mackerel, steaks, haloumi and prawns (from 4pm to 8.30pm).
