Crammed with character and bursting with beams, a night at the Bayard's Cove sees you
sleeping amid whitewashed, rough stone walls and huge church candles. As well as grand
double beds, the gorgeous suites feature mini-cabins, complete with bunk beds and tiny
TVs (the kids will love them), and rooms even have estuary glimpses.
Greenway
( 0844 800 2070; www.nationaltrustcottages.co.uk ; Greenway Rd, Galmpton; ) How's this for a truly
memorable place to stay: Agatha Christie's Greenway estate. The house's stately top-floor
apartment (three/seven nights £2000/3000) sleeps 10 and comes with its own pool; pretty,
three-person Greenway Lodge (two/seven nights £670/1115) links straight into the magic-
al gardens; while South Lodge (two/seven nights £980/1633), which sleeps six, has re-
markable views onto the River Dart.

smoothly sumptuous hotel manages to combine leather curtains, pheasant-feather lamp-
shades and animal-print chairs, and make it all look classy. Breakfasts are laid-back af-

( 01803-833033; www.royalcastle.co.uk ; The Quay; s £120, d £153-207, f from £163; ) The Castle has
stood plum on Dartmouth's waterfront for 500 years. The library is full of battered,
leather-bound books, timbers from a Spanish man-o-war prop up the bar, and antique
chaises longues, massive carved chairs and velvet curtains dot the rooms. Pack a copy of
Agatha Christie's Ordeal by Innocence; the crime writer used the hotel as inspiration for
the Royal George in the novel.
