For a true taste
of Topsham's maritime links, board the Sea Dream and glide past mudflats and marsh
land, passing a panorama of the town. The 15-minute trip leads to a tiny slither of land jut-
ting out from the River Exe's south bank, and the lovely Turf pub. From there you can
stroll a mile further downstream to visit stately Powerderham Castle. Or walk upstream,
beside the canal and mudflats, to the Topsham Ferry, which shuttles back to Topsham.

A blink-and-
you'll miss it trip from Topsham to the south bank of the Exe, crossing the river at its nar-
rowest point. Tranquil waterside paths lead 2 miles downriver to the Turf pub, where the
Sea Dream ferry sails back to Topsham.

As the main high-tide roost on the
River Exe, this is one of the best places to spot birds in Devon and Cornwall. Follow signs
to the hide and in summer look out for greenshank, ringed plover and little egret; winter
brings masses of wigeon, pintail and teal, as well as black-and-white avocet. For best
views, time a visit to the approach of high tide. The reserve is at the end of the Goat Walk
path, at the end of the Strand.

The views from the 4th-floor
lounge of this rambling B&B's tower suite are extraordinary - 360-degree viwes of river,
hillside and heritage town. Water vistas fill the windows of the cabin-like bedroom and
gorgeous bathroom. The two-bedroom Powderham suite boasts a mini-lounge with views
of the river and the eponymous castle. Breakfasts are convivial affairs, served round a
central table stocked with fresh fruits, home-baked bread and home-made jam.
