In-Depth Information
( 01392-873471; www.theglobetopsham.co.uk ; Fore St; d £100; ) The deeply worn doorsteps at
this fine coaching inn give a clue to its grand old age (16th century). The bar features
sloping floors, wood panelling and wrought iron candelabras, while the bedrooms are
much more modern: white-painted beams, smartly tiled bathrooms and soft golden
throws.
Eating & Drinking
Salutation
( 01392-873060; www.salutationtopsham.co.uk ; 68 Fore St; tasting menus 5/9 courses £38/92, with wines £66/150;
6.30-9pm Mon-Sat; ) You can almost taste the ambition at this exquisite restaurant-with-
rooms: chef Tom Williams-Hawkes has worked with the Rothschilds, Gordon Ramsay
and at double-Michelin-starred Gidleigh Park. The fine dining restaurant delivers highly
technical tasting menus, while the bistro (mains £8 to £13, open 7.30am to 5pm Monday
to Saturday) rustles up River Exe moules and slow-braised stews. Or just head in for cof-
fee and cake; the Paris-quality patisserie comes at Devon prices (£3). The bedrooms
(doubles £126 to £165) are as delicious as the food: contemporary-chic in grey and black
candy-stripes and crisply designed lines.

Pebblebed Wine Cellar
( www.pebblebed.co.uk ; Ferry Rd; 5-10pm Fri & Sat, plus 11am-2pm Sat) Add this to your must-visit
list. Trestle tables, whitewashed walls and ranks of balanced bottles lend this vaulted wine
cellar an air of rustic charm. Food comes in the form of pizzas, and local cheese and meat
platters (£7), but the stars of the show are the vintages from Pebblebed's own local vine-
yard - get sipping at a tutored tasting (6pm on Friday and Saturday, noon on Saturday).
WINE BAR
Petite Maison
( 01392-873660; www.lapetitemaison.co.uk ; 35 Fore St; 2/3 courses £32/38; 7-9.30pm Tue-Sat) The focus
here is on intensifying the flavours of already flavour-filled ingredients. Duck comes con-
fit, local meats are slow-roasted or smoked, vegetables are glazed, and fish comes with
rich shellfish-based sauces. Then there are the puddings - indulgence doesn't come more
tempting than the warm-baked chocolate mousse cake.
