content. It is usually easier to create a new template-based page and move the content
from the existing page into the new page.
Editing a Template
One of the most powerful aspects of using templates is that you can adjust all the
template-based pages in a site at once by editing the template. As with CSS styles and
library items, this saves you time and ensures that all the pages maintain a consistent
design. Adjusting elements in the editable regions of a template affects only new pages
created from that template. Existing template-based pages are not affected because these
adjustments might overwrite content you added to those pages. However, repositioning
editable regions, adding new editable regions, or adjusting anything in a noneditable
region affects all new and existing template-based pages.
You can also delete regions from the template. When you delete an editable region
from the template, you choose what happens to the content in that region in the exist-
ing template-based pages. You can move any content from the deleted region to another
editable region or you can delete that content from the page. You can add, edit, or delete
content from the noneditable regions. Any changes made to the noneditable regions in
the template affect all pages created from the template—whether new or existing.
Gage wants every page in the new, template-based portion of the site to have a sub-
heading below the page heading. You'll add an editable region for the subheading to the
template.
To edit the nb_main.dwt template:
1. Open the nb_main . dwt template in Design view, click the blank area to the left
of the Repeat: content region, press the Enter key twice, and then press the Up
arrow key. Two new lines are created below the page_head region.
2. In the Common category of the Insert panel, click the Templates button arrow ,
and then click the Editable Region button. The New Editable Region dialog
box opens.
3. In the Name box, type sub_head , and then click the OK button. The new editable
region appears in the site.
Trouble? If the sub_head text is not visible, it is blocked by the tab of the
content repeating table and you need to hide the invisible elements. On the
Application bar, click View, point to Visual Aids, and then click Invisible Elements
to hide the tab and view the text, complete Step 4, and then show the invisible
elements.
4. Select the sub_head placeholder text in the sub_head region, and then, in the
Property inspector, click the Format button and click Heading 2 . The sub_head
text is formatted.
5. Click next to the sub_head text to deselect the text. See Figure 6-24.
