TOP OF CHAPTER
Around Nikšić
Travelling west on the road to Trebinje in Hercegovina, a large sign on the left (3.5km
after the small roundabout on the edge of town) points to Most na Moštanici , an ancient Ro-
man bridge. It's hard to find as there are no other signs once you leave the main road.
Coming off the road turn sharp left and then right. Veer left after about 300m and head
alongside the village. After a kilometre you'll see the bridge near a sturdy little church.
The bridge's five graceful arches span a ditch that's now completely dry: it seems that it
has outlasted the river itself!
Heading in the same direction, a few kilometres past the turn-off to the bridge, you'll
pass Lake Slano (Slansko jezero) on your left. Although it's an artificial structure (there's a
dam at one edge), its sparkling blue waters, low-lying islands and green borders make for
a beautiful vista. There are a few tiny villages on the shore but there's no straightforward
route down to the water; take whatever turn-off you can find and wind your way down.
You'll be unlikely to find more than a few people fishing or sunbathing.
More popular is Lake Krupac (Krupačko jezero), another dammed lake to the northwest
of town, which is sometimes tagged 'Nikšić's sea'. It has a small sandy beach, a couple
of beach bars, picnic spots under the poplar trees and pedal boats, jet skis and kayaks for
hire. The waters are stocked with California trout.
