KRSTINJA PETRANOVIĆ, LAKE SKADAR
When Krstinja isn't working at the National Park Visitor Centre or the Virpazar Tourist Office, she acts as the
secretary of the Green Boats Association.
Top Recommendations
I always start by asking [visitors] what their interests are, as there are a lot of activities they can do here. We
have a lot of hiking trails, they can rent a kayak, and of course there are the boat trips.
A Typical Two-Hour Cruise
Starting from Virpazar you would first go to the prison island Grmožur and then to a beach near the small fish-
ing village of Pristan - nobody has lived there since the 1979 earthquake. Then you would head to Raduš, anoth-
er fishing village, which is situated at the deepest part of the lake where there's an underwater spring. We always
allow at least 25 minutes for swimming on our trips. After that you could go to the middle of the bird reserve be-
fore heading back.
Visiting Local Wineries
If you come to the tourist office we can tell you which of the small wineries is definitely open for visitors - we
can even call ahead to check for you and to let the owner know you're coming. Even if the winemaker doesn't
speak any English, there's often someone in the family who can. It shouldn't cost more than €5 for tastings.
Murići Мурићи
POP 110
The southern edge of the lake is the most dramatic, with the Rumija Mountains rising
precipitously from the water. From Virpazar there's a wonderful drive (or 56km
mountain-biking route) following the contours of the lake through the mountains and an
enchanting (possibly even enchanted) chestnut forest. The road heads towards the Al-
banian border before crossing the range and turning back towards Ulcinj. About halfway
along the lake a steep side road descends to the village of Murići, a cluster of traditional
buildings set around a mosque.
This is one of the lake's best swimming spots. The water's clear, if a little weedy, and
swarms of little fish follow your feet as you kick up the nutrients beneath.
The Murići Vacation Resort ( 069-688 288; www.nacionalnipark-izletistemurici.com ; cabin per person €25,
campsite per person/car/campervan €5/5/10) has simple log cabins sharing a decent ablutions block,
nestled within an olive grove on the lakeshore. There's also a shady outdoor restaurant
(mains €5 to €9) but if you're nervous about dogs, this might not be for you.
