Spearman's rank correlation was used to assess possible relationships between
children's performances at the three spatial scales. Only between test 2 and 3 a
significant correlation was found (rho
.000) ( see Table 19.4 ). Children
scored similar (low, medium or high) on test 2 and test 3 ( see Fig. 19.7a ). Children
showing a geocentric geographical world view on test 3 obtained lower scores on
test 2 than the children who expressed a heliocentric view on test 3 ( see Fig. 19.7b ).
Half of the children (age 9-10: 66%; age 11-12: 41%) clearly made use of
landmark strategies on test 1. Approximately 25%, using Euclidean strategies, were
able to conceptualize the local environment ( see Fig. 19.4a , d). Those children
obtained higher scores on test 2 and 3 ( see Fig. 19.8 ).
