Getting There & Away
Meknès has two train stations; use the more central El-Amir Abdelkader ( 0535 522763) .
There are plentiful trains to Fez (Dh20, one hour), and Casablanca (Dh90, 3½ hours) via
Rabat (Dh65, 2¼ hours), five for Marrakesh (Dh174, seven hours) and one for Tangier
(Dh85, four hours) - or take a westbound train and change at Sidi Kacem.
CTM bus departures include Casablanca (Dh90, four hours, six daily) via Rabat (Dh55,
2½ hours), Marrakesh (Dh160, eight hours, daily) and Tangier (Dh100, five hours, three
daily). The main bus station lies just outside Bab el-Khemis, west of the medina.
The principal grand taxi rank is at Bab el-Khemis. There are regular departures to Fez
(Dh16, one hour) and Rabat (Dh44, 90 minutes). Grands taxis for Moulay Idriss (Dh12,
20 minutes) leave from opposite the Institut Français.
WORTH A TRIP
VOLUBILIS & MOULAY IDRISS
In the midst of a fertile plain about 33km north of Meknès, Volubilis (Ouailili; admission Dh20, parking Dh5,
guide Dh140; 8am-sunset) are the largest and best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco. One of the country's
most important pilgrimage sites, the lovely whitewashed hill town Moulay Idriss , is only about 4.5km from Vol-
ubilis.
A half-day outing by grand taxi from Meknès will cost around Dh350, including a stop at Moulay Idriss.
