Perennially popular, the Maroc has kept its
standards up over the many years we've been visiting. Friendly and quiet, rooms (with
sinks) are freshly painted and the shared bathrooms are clean. The terrace and orange
tree-filled courtyard add to the ambience.

Built in the 1930s, this
grand old lady carries her age well. There's a good mix of rooms (all have sinks) and
there's plenty of character to go around, plus a peaceful patio and panoramic roof terrace.

This charming guesthouse is a stone's throw from Place el-Hedim. The main entrance
opens onto a courtyard and the whole place has an open, airy layout. Rooms are pretty and
carefully restored, and the owners (keen travellers themselves) eager to swap travel stories
as well as guide guests in the medina.

The essence of cheap and cheerful; we adore
this basic, canteen-style place. Do as everyone else does and fill up on a bowl of
harira
(a
thick soup made from lamb stock, lentils, chickpeas, onions, tomatoes, fresh herbs and
spices) or a plate of
makoda
(potato fritters) with bread and hard-boiled eggs - and walk
out with change from Dh15. We defy you to eat better for less.
