The museum's collection
was depleted during the war years, but renovations have created space for photo and art
exhibitions as well as the ethnic and historical exhibits. Wander through the light-filled
2nd and 3rd floors, where you can see founding father Joseph Jenkins Roberts' dining
table - a gift from England's Queen Victoria. The building was the former legislature.
Providence Island
ISLAND
There isn't much to mark the spot where freed American slaves first disembarked, but the
government has plans to turn Providence Island into a historical attraction. It's a short
drive across the Gabriel Tucker bridge from Waterside Market.
Sleeping
Accommodation in Monrovia is expensive, although there is a growing number of budget
and midrange beds.
St Theresa's Convent

Cheap and cheerful St Theresa's has rooms that back onto the convent and religious
centre. Security has been upped since we last heard reports of thefts here. There's a 10pm
curfew.

The
Corina's main draw is its reasonable ratecard, something lost to most Monrovia hoteliers.
Of course you get what you pay for, but here at least that means comfortable, secure, clean
doubles with breakfast and wi-fi access - even if the decor could be a little more modern
and the location a little closer to town.

A sound midrange boutique-style option, Bella Casa is a short walk from Capitol
Hill and the UN building. They might not quite evoke dreams of Italy, but the rooms are
comfortable and clean and come with air-con, desk and free wi-fi. The suites are large,
with stylish bed linen and a more luxurious touch.
