Getting There & Away
Akosombo is located about 7km north of the Accra-Ho road; the turn-off is at Atimpoku,
just before the beautiful Adomi Bridge on the Volta River.
There are daily tro-tros from Accra to Akosombo (C4, 1½ hours). More likely, you'll
have to change at Kpong (C4, one hour), a major transport hub on the Accra-Ho road, for
onward travel to Atimpoku and Akosombo (C1, 30 minutes).
TOP OF CHAPTER
Amedzofe
Amedzofe's claim to fame is that, at 750m altitude, it is Ghana's highest settlement. The
drive to the village, through the stunning Avatime Hills, is scenic and tortuous; it almost
comes as a surprise when Amedzofe suddenly appears around a bend.
The village offers breathtaking vistas, a waterfall, forests, a cool climate and plenty of
hiking opportunities. There's a fantastic community-run visitor centre ( 054-7297493;
8am-6pm) where you can arrange hikes. Popular choices include a 45-minute walk to Amed-
zofe Falls (admission C5) - the last section is treacherous - and a 30-minute walk to the
summit of Mt Gemi (611m; admission C5), one of the highest mountains in the area,
where there is a 3.5m iron cross and stunning views.
You can stay at the Abraerica ( 054-7752361; www.abraericahospitalities.com ; Amedzofe; s/d with fan
C40/50, d/tw with air-con C65/75) , a newly built hotel with squeaky-clean, slightly impersonal
rooms but fabulous views. The nicest place to stay in the area, however, is Biakpa Mountain
Paradise ( 024-4166226; www.mountainparadise-biakpa.com ; Biakpa; campsites C9, s/d/f C25/40/50) , a
former government rest home converted into a lovely mountain hideaway near the village
of Vane. It's a peaceful place, with a good restaurant, and staff can arrange hikes along the
Kulugu River (C5) and bike rental (per hour C3).
For better or for worse, the (unsealed) road on which the guesthouse is located is about
to become the main (sealed) Ho- Hohoe road. The traffic will definitely affect the site's
tranquility but will also make it more accessible. At the moment, you can get as far as
Vane by tro-tro but you then have to charter a taxi from Vane (C20).
There are tro-tros between Ho, Vane and Amedzofe (C3, one hour) except on Sunday.
A private taxi between Ho and Amedzofe will cost C40.
