for The Gambia hidden behind walls of bougainvillea, but for a dose of luxury you can't

Now here's
a hotel loved and fussed over by its owner. Even the simplest lodging in this red-brick
palace is a large suite with its own Jacuzzi and hand-picked paintings. Our favourite was
the Rolling Stones room, kind of a stylish shrine to one of owner Peter's passions. It's not
one for families but is perfect for couples, and the penthouse with sky-gazer dome and sea
view is ideal for honeymoons. Perfect down to the frosted glasses and thoughtfully chosen
book collection, the Ngala has also one of the top restaurants in Gambia.
Eating
Serekunda and Bakau are best for street food and cheap eateries. For supermarkets head to
Kairaba Ave, where there's plenty of choice, including the large and well-stocked

At the northern end of Kololi beach, this cute
round house serves excellent grilled fish in a youthful atmosphere. As light and sunny as
the reggae classics on loop.

This is the low-key approach to restaurant management:
purchase a few cheap seats, paint them with the Gambian flag, put them on the roadside
and erect a semblance of a fence around it. Now you can serve simple snacks with street
views.
