Very tiny and very simple,
this is a great budget bet. The furniture looks a bit wonky, but beds are comfortable
enough for a good night's sleep.

This
tries hard to be a top-class place, and has quite a few attributes that point that way. It's
pretty, tidy, friendly and bright.
African Village Hotel

Like a slightly scruffy, slightly
bored little sister to the glitzy holiday clubs, this fills a gap somewhere between the bot-
tom of the barrel and lofty palaces. The basic bungalows are a bit crammed together, but
the pool is great, the location practical and extra services like bicycle hire and exchange
bureau welcome.

The soul of this cute garden
place with excellent food and service are managers Geri and Maurice, a couple so dedic-
ated to the possibilities for ecotourism in Gambia that travellers tend to get drawn in.
Rooms are bright with plenty of colourful bedspreads and an open, airy feel.

This
three-storey villa sits in a quiet garden that makes the bustle of Bakau suddenly seem very
far away. Self-catering apartments, with an appealing decor of wood-and-tile simplicity,
come with fully equipped kitchens, bathtub, hairdryer, TV, telephone and plenty of space
(though ' penthouse ' is a slightly ambitious label).
