Fig. 1 Components of anesthesia circuit for rodents
4. Intravenous/Intraarterial catheters: rats—21 G intravenous
catheters; mice—Micro-cannula (ID = 0.007, OD = 0.014).
5. Anesthesia gases: Isoflurane and Oxygen (from O 2 cylinder or
central supply).
6. Isoflurane vaporizer and rebreathing bag (22 mm bush neck).
7. Central suction or charcoal canisters (f/air, Omnicon, Bickford
Inc, NY, USA) for scavenging anesthesia gases.
8. Infusion pumps: (Harvard apparatus: Pump Dual RS-232).
9. Infusion fluids: 0.9% Saline.
10. Soda lime for CO 2 absorption (Sodasorb, WR Grace & Co.
Chicago, IL).
The above parts (ventilator, O 2 cylinder, vaporizer, rebreathing
bag, container with indicator soda lime on the outlet side to absorb
CO 2 ) are assembled using plastic tubings and connectors as shown in
the Fig. 1 . Equipment like vaporizers requires regular calibration.

Surgery
The following sets of instruments are required for craniectomy and
CCI injury induction.
1. Surgical instruments: scalpel handle (No. 3), scalpel blades (No.
10, 15), jeweler's forceps (11 cm, No. 5), needle holders (12 cm),
eye scissors (10.5/11/5), iris forceps serrated (10 cm, curved
points 0.7 mm), eye specula, Adson's tissue forceps (12 cm, 1 × 2
teeth), bone rongeurs (Friedman bone rongeurs, curved).
2. Microsurgical instruments: eye scissors (11/11.5 cm), micro-
Adson's tissue forceps (12 cm, 1 × 2 teeth).
