G HOTEL$$$
( 238 0000; www.ghotel.com.my ; 168 Persiaran Gurney; r incl breakfast RM450-1248; ) The 303
rooms here are studies in minimalist, cubist cool - collections of geometric form set off by
swatches of blocky colour. There's a good crowd of creative and simply successful profes-
sionals blowing through the doors, giving the G a vibe that's as Manhattan as it is Malay-
sia. The hotel is about 3.5km northwest of central George Town; a taxi here will cost
RM15.

Batu Ferringhi, Teluk Bahang & Around
Explore
Batu Ferringhi is the best easy-access beach stop on Penang, and it does make a pleasant
break from the city. However, the beach doesn't count among Malaysia's finest; the water
isn't as clear as you might expect, swimming often means battling jellyfish, and the beach
itself can be dirty. The vast majority of the area's accommodation and restaurants are loc-
ated along Jln Batu Ferringhi, the main strip, a short walk from the beach.
Teluk Bahang is the quiet (sometimes deathly so) beach a few kilometres past Batu Fer-
ringhi. The best reason for heading out this way is to spend time in Penang National Park
which also has deserted beaches to which you can hike. Other attractions include the
Tropical Spice Garden where you can take cooking lessons and a new theme park.
