housed Southeast Asia's oldest Chinese medical hall wholesaler. There's a good range of
rooms which are simply but comfortably decorated in a heritage style. Reminders of the
building's former status abound.
A small museum about the medical hall is in the works and there's also a cafe, Tang's
Bistro.

For the
epitome of a local experience, book one of the basic rooms in this pier-bound home at the
edge of George Town's biggest clan jetty. As the name implies, you'll be crashing with a
local family. The noise from grandma's TV is free, although breakfast will set you back an
extra RM5.

You have your choice of experiences here: be completely independent in either
of two open-concept self-catering apartments above an art gallery, or live in Chinese herit-
age elegance in one of the two homestay-style apartments attached to the owner's restored
shophouse home. If you can't decide, keep in mind that the latter option involves being
pampered and taken around town by your hosts.

Palanquinn comprises
three houses dating back to 1927; its six rooms feel spacious and homey. We particularly
liked the huge bathrooms - some with retractable roof - in most units. And you'd be hard-
pressed to find a friendlier and more courteous host than Kelvyn.
Lg Bangkok is located just off Jln Burma, about 2.5km north of Jln Transfer, a RM15
taxi ride from central George Town.
